Having watched from afar and seeing news snippets about this local group of people who rode from John O Groats to Lands end then Basingstoke to Paris, I thought that a personal challenge was in order.
When the ride from Basingstoke to Cologne came along I knew it would be the ideal challenge. After all, how hard can 493 miles in five days be? Well, I am finding out now that it’s harder than I could ever have imagined, and that’s just the training.
Not a cyclist, my last foray on a saddle was in 1996. Just finished my GCSEs and went on an accidental 40-mile round trip with no mobile, no contact with anyone; coming home to a rollicking from my parents after getting in after 11 pm, dehydrated and barely walk.
23 years on and now its time to do a little further than that and I honestly believe, if I can do it, anyone can.
So why the Ark Cancer Centre Charity?
I, like many, have been touched by cancer and was bowled over by the enthusiasm of Mark Jones the first time I met him and knew the Ark was the charity for me. On a personal note, I had a friend who battled cancer at the age of 20 and my Uncle died within 2 months of his diagnosis, so I, like many, would like to do as much as possible to fight against this deadly disease and to have a cancer treatment centre on our doorstep in Basingstoke, which will be fantastic for the town and the local area.
So, here goes nothing, training, riding and fundraising, so if you can help, please support me on Just Giving.
